How to Calculate CBM: Formula and 3 Worked Examples

How to calculate CBM: length times width times height, divided by one million

CBM means cubic meter. To calculate it, multiply length × width × height in centimeters, then divide by 1,000,000. That is the whole formula. The mistakes happen after it: wrong units, rounding too early, and forgetting to multiply by the number of cartons.

The CBM formula

  • Centimeters: L × W × H ÷ 1,000,000 = CBM
  • Meters: L × W × H = CBM (no division)
  • Inches: L × W × H ÷ 61,024 = CBM

Why 1,000,000? One cubic meter is 100 cm × 100 cm × 100 cm = 1,000,000 cubic centimeters. Why 61,024? The international inch is defined as exactly 0.0254 m, so one cubic inch is 0.000016387064 m³, and 1 ÷ 0.000016387064 is about 61,023.74. Most people round it to 61,024 (inch = 25.4 mm, per NIST SP 811 as cited by Electropedia).

Example 1: one carton in centimeters

A carton measures 50 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm.

50 × 40 × 30 = 60,000. Then 60,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.06 CBM per carton.

You ship 120 cartons. 0.06 × 120 = 7.2 CBM.

Example 2: inches

A carton measures 20 in × 16 in × 12 in.

20 × 16 × 12 = 3,840 cubic inches. Then 3,840 ÷ 61,024 = 0.0629 CBM per carton.

For 100 cartons: 0.0629 × 100 = 6.29 CBM.

Example 3: a mixed shipment

Calculate each line, then add. Do not average the box sizes.

LineSize (cm)CBM eachQtyCBM
Cartons A50 × 40 × 300.061207.20
Cartons B60 × 40 × 400.096504.80
Pallets120 × 80 × 1000.9643.84
Total15.84

The rounding trap

Cartons B are 0.096 CBM each. If you round that to 0.10 before multiplying, 50 cartons become 5.0 CBM instead of 4.8. That is a 4% error on one line. On a full shipment it can change the space you book.

Rule: keep all decimals while you calculate. Round only the final total.

Other common mistakes

  • Mixed units. Measure all three sides in the same unit before you divide.
  • Using inner size. Use the outside size of the packed carton, with the packaging.
  • Forgetting quantity. The formula gives one carton. Multiply by how many you ship.
  • Treating CBM as the freight charge. CBM is volume. The carrier may charge by weight or volume, whichever applies to your shipment. Ask your forwarder.

Check your numbers

You can run the same sums in the CBM calculator. It uses the formulas above, so the three examples give the same results. When you know your total CBM, the load planner shows how the cartons sit in a 20ft or 40ft container.
